Bill Moyers: The 'Conspiracy of Silence' on the 10th Anniversary of the Iraq War

A decade’s gone by since the invasion of Iraq and many in Washington and big media would like to forget their role in war.

Ten years ago this week, the United States started a war that would last for eight years, claiming an estimated 189,000 lives, costing over $2 trillion and causing untold economic and emotional devastation for the Iraqi people. Is there a “conspiracy of silence” over the anniversary of our invasion of Iraq?

Why don't cities and states teach their people about the CONSTITUTION?

They keep embarrassing themselves by trying to be fascists.  Schools, cops, social workers.   TSA agents.  All taking themselves too seriously, running roughshod over us ordinary folks.

Here's another case, this one in New Jersey of cops and social workers running amok.   And being stupid enough to show up at a gun owner's house WITHOUT A SEARCH WARRANT?   (Always say NO!)

Missouri GOP Bill Allows Doctors And Hospitals To Refuse To Provide Reproductive Services To Women

The Republican war on women continues. A week after Hawaii Democrats pushed a bill through the state Senate that would require hospitals to offer emergency contraception to rape victims, Republicans in Missouri unveiled a bill in the general assembly that would do the opposite and more.

HB 457 is sponsored by House Speaker Timothy Jones (R). According to the Kansas City Star, the bill would “allow medical professionals to opt out of providing birth control, sterilization and assisted reproduction services and stem cell research. They would also be able to deny referrals for care,” and “would be shielded from punishment for refusing to provide this type of care if it violates their religious or moral principles.”

In short, doctors and hospitals could refuse to provide women contraception services for religious reasons and could refuse to refer patients to medical professionals and institutions that would help them. Rape victims could be denied emergency contraception to prevent becoming pregnant by their rapist. And even women with ectopic pregnancies could be refused care until their lives are in jeopardy because her health provider believes a certain way.

Michelle Trupiano of Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri told the Star that,

“A woman with an ectopic pregnancy that isn’t considered life-threatening could be denied care, including a referral as to where to receive care, until she comes back so sick that her life is in danger.”

Trupiano added that rape victims would be denied “the minimum standard of care determined by leading health care organizations such as the American Medical Association,” which includes emergency contraception.

Bills such as these have been a current trend running rampant in Republican circles. Republicans have pushed similar bills Nebraska, Pennsylvania, and many other states including Kansas, where it was signed into law last spring.

Republicans claim such bills are needed to protect the religious freedom of doctors but what these bills really do is trample on the rights of female patients to receive the care that they need and want. The fact that these bill target only women’s health care proves that. If a doctor were to deny a man a vasectomy or Viagra on religious grounds, Republican heads would explode with rage. They wouldn’t give a damn about protecting religious freedom in this kind of reverse situation. These bills create a double standard in the medical field.

The Star interviewed Dr. Ed Weisbart, a St. Louis family physician. Weisbart made it clear that medical professionals are supposed to put their patients first and that what doctors believe or don’t believe in religious matters is irrelevant to how they treat them. “Medicine is not supposed to be about the values of the physician or the institution,” Weisbart said. “It’s supposed to be about the values of the patient. Period.”

And Dr. Weisbart is absolutely right. Bills like these have zero disregard for what patients believe. By passing such bills, Republicans are violating the beliefs of patients. Religious freedom is a two-way street. You can’t protect the beliefs of doctors and disregard the beliefs of patients at the same time. Doing so creates mistrust between doctors and patients in a field where trust is absolutely necessary. That’s why patient needs should always come first. Doctors are in hospitals to practice medicine, NOT religion. And mistrust between doctors and patients is a serious threat to health that could result in death.

Doctors have every right to practice whatever religion they want. What they do not have the right to do is to force their beliefs onto their patients. The second a doctor walks into the office their religious beliefs must be left at the door. If a patient wants contraception, the doctor should only refuse if there is a medical reason to do so. That’s the way medicine and doctoring should work.

The Missouri House is expected to take up the bill as early as Monday.

Food for Thought.....
I'm debating Alan Simpson again this morning and I know exactly what he's going to say, because I've debated him before: The budget deficit is being driven by selfish seniors who don't want anyone to touch their Social Security or Medicare, and we're already cutting benefits for poor children because of the lobbying clout of the AARP.

Simpson is a good friend, but he's dead wrong.

In coming months you can expect more of this -- an increasingly ugly argument over whether children or seniors should bear the most burden. The fact is, neither should bear any burden. We are the richest nation in the history of the world -- richer now than we've ever been. But an increasing share of that wealth is held by a smaller and smaller share of the population, who have bribed legislators to reduce their taxes and provide loopholes so they pay even less. The budget deficit "crisis" has been manufactured by them to distract our attention from this overriding fact, and to pit the rest of us against each other for a smaller and smaller share of what remains. Needy children should be getting far more help, better schools, better nutrition. Seniors (now typically paying 20 to 40 percent of their income for health care) need better healthcare coverage and more Social Security.
The richest nation in the history of the world shouldn't have to choose between its children and its elderly.

Jesus To Speak At Conservative CPAC Meeting. Republicans worried.

JesusVarious sources have confirmed rumors that Jesus, the Son of God, will be a speaker at the 2013 gathering of Conservatives. Interestingly enough, it has been leaked that the Alpha and Omega was not actually invited to be a speaker, but using the powers of his Almighty Father, had himself put on the list to speak the last night of the conference.

In-fighting has erupted among the Conservative powers that be. Members like Mike Huckabee and Newt Gingrich are applauding the welcoming of the Lamb of God to speak to their followers, while morally-questionable loudmouths like Limbaugh and Bachmann are beginning to vocalize their fears of allowing the all-knowing one into their hypocritical midst.

Sources close to the King of the Jews have disclosed that Mr. Christ does not plan on tackling specific issues like abortion or gay marriage, much the way he didn’t back in the day, most likely because he still feels that treating each other with respect and love are really the things we should be focusing on. This point, undoubtedly, will still be lost on many in the Conservative camp.

One of Mr. Huckabee’s aides, asked to be kept anonymous , has been quoted as saying, “Our biggest fear is that he will come out all wrathful and pissed like at that temple that one time, and start yelling at us all for pretending to follow his teachings, while just being a bunch of shitty human beings who could care less about their fellow man.”

The Koch Brothers, Daddy Warbucks to the Conservative Movement, have remained silent on the issue. Fox News has begun questioning the authenticity of this man who is claiming to be the Prince of Peace, and has hinted at this appearance being another Liberal-conspiracy, to push Obamacare on the American people.

The NRA has publicly announced that every patriotic American, in the light of this recent phenomenon, should purchase a gun.

Various attempts to contact Christ’s media team for verification of this story have been made at numerous churches and holy sites around the country. So far, all requests have gone unanswered.

Sequester firings have already started

Just this week, my ex-Marine nephew lost his contract company job to a sequester layoff.   Wife works there too, she may lose HER job in Arizona too!   There'll be more.

I am SOOO glad we two boomers went into technical or health technical areas.    True, once you hit sixty, they don't really want to pay you anymore, but it was a good ride and I made it to Social Security age, but barely.  Other relatives aren't faring so well, sadly.     I think a lot of middle class Americans are going to end up in DEEP SHIT, and loosing a lot of purchasing power.    And their minwage kids will be moving back in with them just to keep the house warm and pay it off.   Like Asians do!    Very Depression era lifestyles like The Waltons.  Still gotta big house?  Keep it.  Kids will be coming back in 5 years!   And you won't be moving into a retirement apt because you won't be able to afford it!

Yup, we can't live on Chinese borrowed money much longer.  And you won't get a blank Medicare check at the hospital when your body starts crashing!   They WILL start rationing.... even if they don't call them "Death Panels."   They can't afford NOT to!  And the drug companies are raping you of ALL your Social Security and retirement stipend!    They've bribed enough Congressmen to forbid you to buy the same drugs from Canada at a fraction of the retail cost!

Sorry.   Government needs to prune back the corporate greed DESPITE that they want to bribe your congressmen to leave them alone to screw you over!

A deliberate, Tea Party plot to DESTROY Our government??

The Sequester as a Tea Party Plot

by Robert Reich

Sequestration grew out of a strategy hatched soon after they took over the House in 2011.
Imagine a plot to undermine the government of the United States, to destroy much of its capacity to do the public’s business, and to sow distrust among the population.

Imagine further that the plotters infiltrate Congress and state governments, reshape their districts to give them disproportionate influence in Washington, and use the media to spread big lies about the government.

Finally, imagine they not only paralyze the government but are on the verge of dismantling pieces of it.

Far-fetched?  Perhaps. But take a look at what’s been happening in Washington and many state capitals since Tea Party fanatics gained effective control of the Republican Party, and you’d be forgiven if you see parallels.

Tea Party Republicans are crowing about the “sequestration” cuts beginning today (Friday). “This will be the first significant tea party victory in that we got what we set out to do in changing Washington,” says Rep. Tim Huelskamp (Kan.), a Tea Partier who was first elected in 2010.

Sequestration is only the start. What they set out to do was not simply change Washington but eviscerate the U.S. government — “drown it in the bathtub,” in the words of their guru Grover Norquist – slashing Social Security and Medicare, ending worker protections we’ve had since the 1930s, eroding civil rights and voting rights, terminating programs that have helped the poor for generations, and making it impossible for the government to invest in our future.

Sequestration grew out of a strategy hatched soon after they took over the House in 2011, to achieve their goals by holding hostage the full faith and credit of the United States – notwithstanding the Constitution’s instruction that the public debt of the United States “not be questioned.”

To avoid default on the public debt, the White House and House Republicans agreed to harsh and arbitrary “sequestered” spending cuts if they couldn’t come up with a more reasonable deal in the interim. But the Tea Partiers had no intention of agreeing to anything more reasonable. They knew the only way to dismember the federal government was through large spending cuts without tax increases.

Nor do they seem to mind the higher unemployment their strategy will almost certainly bring about. Sequestration combined with January’s fiscal cliff deal is expected to slow economic growth by 1.5 percentage points this year – dangerous for an economy now crawling at about 2 percent. It will be even worse if the Tea Partiers  refuse to extend the government’s spending authority, which expires March 27.

A conspiracy theorist might think they welcome more joblessness because they want Americans to be even more fearful and angry. Tea Partiers use fear and anger in their war against the government – blaming the anemic recovery on government deficits and the government’s size, and selling a poisonous snake-oil of austerity economics and trickle-down economics as the remedy.

They likewise use the disruption and paralysis they’ve sown in Washington to persuade Americans government is necessarily dysfunctional, and politics inherently bad. Their continuing showdowns and standoffs are, in this sense, part of the plot.

What is the President’s response? He still wants a so-called “grand bargain” of “balanced” spending cuts (including cuts in the projected growth of Social Security and Medicare) combined with tax increases on the wealthy. So far, though, he has agreed to a gross imbalance — $1.5 trillion in cuts to Republicans’ $600 billion in tax increases on the rich.

The President apparently believes Republicans are serious about deficit reduction, when in fact the Tea Partiers now running the GOP are serious only about dismembering the government.

And he seems to accept that the budget deficit is the largest economic problem facing the nation, when in reality the largest problem is continuing high unemployment (some 20 million Americans unemployed or under-employed), declining real wages, and widening inequality. Deficit reduction now or in the near-term will only make these worse.

Besides, the deficit is now down to about 5 percent of GDP – where it was when Bill Clinton took office. It is projected to mushroom in later years mainly because healthcare costs are expected to rise faster than the economy is expected to grow, and the American population is aging. These trends have little or nothing to do with government programs. In fact, Medicare is far more efficient than private health insurance.

I suggest the President forget about a “grand bargain.” In fact, he should stop talking about the budget deficit and start talking about jobs and wages, and widening inequality – as he did in the campaign. And he should give up all hope of making a deal with the Tea Partiers who now run the Republican Party.

Instead, the President should let the public see the Tea Partiers for who they are — a small, radical minority intent on dismantling the government of the United States. As long as they are allowed to dictate the terms of public debate they will continue to hold the rest of us hostage to their extremism.

Something in Topeka's Water Supply makes Legislators STUPID!

The far right Kansas Senate okayed a bill today that will require people receiving unemployment insurance or state assistance to take drug tests to receive benefits.

Ignoring the fact that this is an offensive bill that makes nasty, unfounded assumptions about people who receive state aid, it's a complete waste of money. Florida tried implementing this policy and wasted millions of dollars for no benefit.

Tell your state representatives to get back to work protecting public schools and bringing jobs to Kansas, not testing Kansans pee and wasting their time and our money.
