Reid: Romney didn't pay any taxes for ten years!

WASHINGTON -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has what he says is an informed explanation for why Mitt Romney refuses to release additional tax returns. According a Bain investor, Reid charged, Romney didn't pay any taxes for 10 years.

In a wide-ranging interview with The Huffington Post from his office on Capitol Hill, Reid saved some of his toughest words for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. Romney couldn't make it through a Senate confirmation process as a mere Cabinet nominee, the majority leader insisted, owing to the opaqueness of his personal finances.

"His poor father must be so embarrassed about his son," Reid said, in reference to George Romney's standard-setting decision to turn over 12 years of tax returns when he ran for president in the late 1960s. 

Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader, ratcheted up the speculation about Mitt Romney's unreleased tax returns.

Saying he had "no problem with somebody being really, really wealthy," Reid sat up in his chair a bit before stirring the pot further. A month or so ago, he said, a person who had invested with Bain Capital called his office.

"Harry, he didn't pay any taxes for 10 years," Reid recounted the person as saying.

"He didn't pay taxes for 10 years! Now, do I know that that's true? Well, I'm not certain," said Reid. "But obviously he can't release those tax returns. How would it look?

"You guys have said his wealth is $250 million," Reid went on. "Not a chance in the world. It's a lot more than that. I mean, you do pretty well if you don't pay taxes for 10 years when you're making millions and millions of dollars."

American Girls Win Olympic Gymnastics!

 LONDON — The United States women’s gymnastics team, clad in shiny, sparkly red uniforms, held hands and stared at the scoreboard at the conclusion of the team finals Tuesday, the teammates looking frozen as they waited for the news they knew would come.

The five teenagers had just put forth a series of stunning performances that kept them in first place from start to finish, with a slim lead eventually turning into a landslide. Still, with hearts pounding, they saved their celebration until it was official.

Minutes later, when the United States appeared at the top of the leader board announcing that the Americans had won the Olympic team gold medal, the gymnasts could no longer contain their joy. Power grid collapses in India  680 MILLION in the dark

NEW DELHI—India suffered the world's biggest-ever power outage Tuesday as transmission networks serving areas inhabited by 680 million collapsed, putting the nation's ramshackle infrastructure on stark display.

The grid failure, the second massive blackout in as many days, happened around 1 p.m. local time and affected 18 states and two union territories in north and eastern India, grinding trains across large swaths of the country to a halt, forcing thousands of hospitals and factories to operate on generators, temporarily stranding hundreds of coal miners underground and causing losses to businesses estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

The government said power was about 80% restored in north India by late Tuesday evening.

Romney's Tax Returns hacked by Anonymous

Late last night, the mysterious group of hackers known as Anonymous successfully hacked the main database for the Internal Revenue Service. The group appeared to have a singular target- Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Romney has been criticized by both parties for his failure to produce more than one past tax return.

According to Ann Romney on ABC’s “Good Morning America” they had no intention of ever disclosing the contents on those returns: “We’ve given all you people need to know and understand about our financial situation and how we live our life”. Despite the stagnant economy and broad dissatisfaction with national conditions, Barack Obama holds a significant lead over Mitt Romney.

Scalia Suggests ‘Hand-Held Rocket Launchers’ Are Protected Under Second Amendment

This morning on Fox News Sunday, Justice Antonin Scalia reiterated just how extremely his Constitutional originalism can be applied. Referring to the recent shooting in Aurora, CO, host Chris Wallace asked the Supreme Court Justice about gun control, and whether the Second Amendment allows for any limitations to gun rights. Scalia admitted there could be, such as “frighting” (carrying a big ax just to scare people), but they would still have to be determined with an 18th-Century perspective in mind. According to his originalism, if a weapon can be hand-held, though, it probably still falls under the right o “bear arms”:

WALLACE: What about… a weapon that can fire a hundred shots in a minute?

SCALIA: We’ll see. Obviously the Amendment does not apply to arms that cannot be hand-carried — it’s to keep and “bear,” so it doesn’t apply to cannons — but I suppose there are hand-held rocket launchers that can bring down airplanes, that will have to be decided.

School Massacre Averted

An Oklahoma high school student was arrested after a cab driver reported hearing him plot a Columbine-style shooting at his school, police said.

Timmy Eike, 18, who would have been a senior this fall at Woodward High School, was arrested Tuesday after police found a shotgun, rifle and 250 rounds of ammunition in his bedroom.   And, according to KWTV, court records show Eike bought those weapons illegally in the past month.

Law enforcement authorities were led to Eike by a cab driver who told the station he drove Eike to work at Walmart several times in recent weeks, and the teen spoke of killing people, hiding bodies and getting out of the country.

JERUSALEM (NBC)  - Mitt Romney would “respect” Israel's use of military force to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, a senior aide said on Sunday as the Republican presidential candidate began his visit to Jerusalem.

"If Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing that capability, the governor would respect that decision," Romney's senior national security aide Dan Senor told reporters traveling with the candidate.

While stopping short of endorsing a preemptive military attack, the comment seemed to differ with President Barack Obama's attempts to convince Israel to avoid any such move.

Romney doesn't think Public Schools are Worth the Investment.

DETROIT -- Vice President Joe Biden says Mitt Romney doesn't treat public education as a priority and distrusts the hardworking teachers who struggle to create opportunity for the nation's young people.

Biden addressed 2,500 delegates at the American Federation of Teachers national convention in Detroit on Sunday.

He says the Republican presidential candidate plans to gut education funding to finance tax breaks for the wealthy. And he says Romney and his GOP rivals made clear during the primary debates that "they don't think public education is worth the investment."

Biden says Romney backs Republican budget plans to slash spending on the Head Start preschool program, as well as grants and loans for college students.

Cheney said Palin, then the first-term governor of Alaska, failed the most basic test of being on the vice presidential short list: "Is this person capable of being president of the United States?"
Said Cheney: "I like Governor Palin. I've met her. I know her. ... Attractive candidate. But based on her background -- she'd only been governor for, what, two years -- I don't think she passed that test ... of being ready to take over. And I think that was a mistake."

Actually I thought CHENEY was a mistake as well, but for a different reason. He was a criminal. Palin was indeed a stupid choice just designed to win, but McCain could've handled the job. CHENEY, though, was needed to run the country with BUSH because Bush WASN'T able to handle the job by himself.

For the same reason, ROMNEY better find himself a CRACKERJACK Vice president to tell him what to say and do in the sad event he wins.

Obama Signs Military Assistance for Israel

 US President Barack Obama has signed a piece of legislation ratified by Congress that gives Israel another $70 million in military assistance, on top of the $3 billion the United States had already pledged to provide to the Israeli military this year.

On Friday, Obama signed the United States-Israel Enhanced Security Cooperation Act of 2012, which provides more US taxpayer dollars to help Israel expand its Iron Dome short-range rocket defense system, Xinhua reported.

The Iron Dome is a short-range rocket defense system designed to intercept rockets and artillery shells fired from a range of between four and 70 kilometers.

Representatives of the pro-Israeli lobby, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), and Israeli journalists were invited to the signing ceremony, which was held at the White House.

“I have made it a top priority for my administration to deepen cooperation with Israel across the whole spectrum of security issues — intelligence, military, technology,” Obama said before signing the bill in the Oval Office.

But come Saturday, the dark-money nonprofits face a dilemma. A high-profile court case known as Van Hollen v. FEC threatens to shine an unwelcome beam of sunlight on donors bankrolling these organizations. Mitt Romney: The Gated Candidate

The wealthiest Americans often choose to live in gated communities, designed to shield them from the intrusion of those Ann Romney calls "you people."

Now, Mitt Romney is applying that same notion to his campaign for the presidency. 

He's offering Americans a gated candidate, with whole areas of his record walled off to keep "you people" from knowing about them. 

The scope of information gated off is striking and unprecedented in modern presidential politics. Romney insured that records on his stint as Governor and as CEO of the Olympics were scrubbed. He walls off access to his history at Bain, the company he led. Romney refuses to reveal his tax returns. He walls off information about the bundlers who are raising the money for the campaign to whom he will be deeply indebted. Not surprisingly, he stayed mum as Republican Senators torpedoed the legislation to require disclosure of corporate and individual contributors who give more than $10,000 to non-profits now poisoning the airwaves with attack ads.

St Louis Post Dispatch Poll has Claire McCaskill Trailing
No matter who wins the Missouri Republican nomination to the U.S. Senate on Aug. 7, Democrat Claire McCaskill is running from behind.

McCaskill, the first-term incumbent Democratic senator, trails all three of her likely Republican challengers, according to a new Post-Dispatch/News 4 poll. She would lose to GOP frontrunner John Brunner by 11 percentage points if they were matched up today, the poll found. She would fall to Sarah Steelman or Todd Akin as well, though by smaller margins. 12 Bigoted Taunts Peddled By Romney Camp and Allies

Corporate media largely ignored the subtext of Romney's earliest race-coded comments, and have been content to let more recent and blatant examples die after a day in the news cycle.
 

Mitt Romney's named campaign advisers want you to know that they had nothing, nada -- oops, didn't mean to use a foreign word -- to do with the assertion of an unnamed campaign adviser that Barack Obama just doesn't get that special relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States on account of his father being from Kenya. From the Telegraph:

“We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and he feels that the special relationship is special,” the adviser said of Mr Romney, adding: “The White House didn’t fully appreciate the shared history we have”.

Yowsa. Might that have been a bit too explicit a revelation of the Romney metamessage? Late on Wednesday, the Associated Press reported:

Romney campaign spokesman Ryan Williams said Wednesday that if an adviser did say that, the adviser wasn’t reflecting Romney’s views.

But Telegraph readers, and those of us following the campaign stateside, might be forgiven for taking the report at face value, seeing how it simply follows a pattern of race-baiting and xenophobic condemnations of the president by Romney and his surrogates -- a pattern that dates back to last January. Corporate media largely ignored the subtext of Romney's earliest race-coded comments, and have been content to let more recent and blatant examples die after a day in the news cycle. So, as a public service, AlterNet here serves up 12 of the Romney campaign's great moments in bigotry.

1. Only Anglo-Saxons need apply. As recounted above, and blogged by Sarah Seltzer, a Romney adviser, speaking with the Daily Telegraph's Jon Swaine, made anonymous comments that essentially boiled down to the notion that Obama couldn't understand the UK's special relationship with its former colonies across the pond because he is either a) the son of a non-American African; b) black; c) not white; d) not Anglo-Saxon; or e) all of the above.

While spokesperson Andrea Saul said either the story or the assertion was "not true," it's not clear from the e-mail she sent to CBS News which she meant. The story broke on the eve of Romney's visit to London to evoke his Olympic-helming triumph and raise campaign cash.

In fact, Anglo-Saxon-gate fits so neatly into the Romney campaign narrative that the candidate himself seemed a bit tied in knots during a Wednesday interview with Brian Williams of the NBC Nightly News (via USA Today ):

"I don't agree with whoever that adviser is," Romney said in an interview with NBC News that aired this evening. "But I can tell you that we have a very special relationship between the United States and Great Britain. ... I also believe the president understands that."

Note that Romney has not pledged to fire "whoever that adviser is" if he finds out who he or she is, nor has he pledged to find out who that person is. (We do, however, note that Romney foreign policy adviser John Bolton has used the term "Anglo-Saxon " before in his critique of Obama.)

2. Dog-whistling "Dixie."  Here we speak of Romney's linguistic outreach to those Republicans for whom the Civil War never ended. During the campaign for the Iowa caucuses (which Romney lost to former U.S. senator Rick Santorum, himself a master-race-baiter), Romney unveiled his nativist, dog-whistling strategy for the general election. Chauncey DeVega unpacked an awkward bit of Romney phrasing, delivered during the heat of the Republican presidential primary:

Mitt Romney wants to " keep America America ." The dropping of one letter from the Ku Klux Klan’s slogan, “Keep America American,” does not remove the intent behind Romney’s repeated use of such a virulently bigoted phrase. While Mitt Romney can claim ignorance of the slogan’s origins, he is intentionally channeling its energy.

During that same period, Romney also debuted, in more subtle form, the notion of Obama as not quite American, contending that the president "doesn't understand America."

BURYING YOUR ELDERLY PARENTS....

MY RESPONSE about a local news story about a NURSING HOME HAD 2 DEATHS. Well, so what? People die weekly at nursing homes!  It's where they go die so you don't have to take care of them!

 Nursing homes get sued all the time.  Probably mostly by survivors looking for money! One of the best ones in town let my dad fall on his head on the way to the bathrooom, but didn't have a strap around his chest to hold onto.

He hit his head, stroked, couldn't swallow. But he hated being in a nursing home.  After my mom dying of cancer, and also my grandma who stroked and had a stomach tube fail, I didn't put a feeding tube in him because he wouldn't have liked it much, and they usually get infected anyway.

He'd already told me at lunchtime once, "man should not live this way" when we saw an elderly woman being spoonfed what amounted to babyfood. I didn't sue. Dad was ready to go, and I didn't need to take money from other elderly residents needing better daily care!

I'd learned from grandma in another state that stomach tubes always fail for the very elderly, and only prolong their deaths!  I did not serve her well, sadly.  I did better for her daughter and her son in law because her suffering taught me not to prolong  her death! How naive I was with my 'pro life' insanity!

Sadly, the media's not interested in real journalism affecting us baby boomers as we say goodbye to our WWII age parents. It's easier to just run murders, fires, car wrecks, and news releases.

Right about the time you've buried ONE parent, learned a few things before you bury the OTHER one.... then when you get pretty good about hard decisions, and hospice, and the governmental maize about Medicaid beds, and letting them go emotionally and with your unlike-minded siblings... WELL, YOU'VE COMPLETELY RUN OUT OF PARENTS!!!!!

-0- If your parents are in a nursing home, visit them NOT LESS than weekly, on a schedule. Better every other day. And talk to them about END OF LIFE STUFF! since they didn't talk about it already!
 

OVERSTAYING OUR WELCOME.  Ya know how we all think we'll live forever!   But who's going to feed us and wipe our asses when we can't?    Fact is, children would rather pay a low-paid nurse's aide to do it, while hoping this won't last too long.

If you're getting on in years, get your medical and financial affairs in order, face end-of- life decisions and plans with your kids head-on, choose the right- thinking one to manage these things.

• Give your money to your grandchildren at least 7 years early, putting them in school. The only difference between a Medicaid bed, and a private-pay bed is a roommate. In either case, unless you're very wealthy at a VERY high dollar establishment, nursing home care is going to suck unless your kids are there every day!

• 
  Don't let the doctors prolong your death just because they CAN! You have to decide. Do you want to live a few more months or use that money to put all your grandkids through college? But you have to PLAN...not decide that at the last minute!
  
  You will NOT live forever so take care of those you love a decade early if your savings are modest!

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) drew a fairly strict line in the sand on Sunday with respect to the coming debate over gun control, suggesting that there is a constitutional right to buy high-capacity clips and magazines.

"Does something that would limit magazines that could carry 100 rounds, would that infringe on the constitutional right?" host Chris Wallace asked Johnson on "Fox News Sunday."

"I believe so," Johnson replied. "People will talk about unusually lethal weapons, that could be potentially a discussion you could have. But the fact of the matter is there are 30-round magazines that are just common all over the place. You simply can't keep these weapons out of the hands of sick, demented individuals who want to do harm. And when you try and do it, you restrict our freedom."

High-capacity magazines were banned under the Federal Assault Weapons Ban, which President Bill Clinton signed into law in 1994 and which expired 10 years later. Since then, gun control advocates have focused their attention on them in their efforts to curb gun-related violence.

It's common knowledge that most Congressmen won't touch gun control-- even if reasonable on the deadliest mass assault weapons, fearing the power of the NRA to get them thrown out of office.

The Syrian regime threatened to use chemical and biological weapons in the case of an external attack yesterday, in what appeared to be a chilling warning to Western and Arab nations pushing for intervention in the country's bloody civil war. 

The comments by a foreign ministry spokesman, Jihad Makdissi, were the first public admission by the Syrian government that it possesses such weapons of mass destruction. Mr Makdissi stressed that such weaponry would not be used against the Syrian people.
