Missouri River Creeps towards Downtown Parkville

The flooding Missouri River has now entered the Kansas City area, inching towards Parkville's downtown.  Police officer Randy Stone says he's been moving the barracades every hour as the water heads towards the dikes built two weeks ago by volunteers.
The water crossed the small creek bridge early in the morning and by midday was halfway to the railroad tracks separating Parkville's park area from downtown businesses.

This is the last of the public's sightseeing from the large parking area as water is about to inundate parts of the Parkville Farmers Market grounds.

FEMA and 41 half-ass the Joplin housing problem - and more from Skipwaves 6/28

JOPLIN, Missouri - Because the Joplin tornado destroyed about 8,000 homes, you can imagine how many families are homeless. FEMA is bringing in about 180 mobile home units to give families temporary housing for 18 months.

41 interviewed exactly one of the 180 getting a mobile home from the government.  Guess they didn't have enough reporters to interview the 7,820 who aren't...and presumably are staying with friends or in a shelter (the reporter didn't SAY).   Way to go, FEMA!   Way to go 41... a serious issue they ignore to do a fucquing warm and fuzzy feature story that misses the real one.  (Too little, too late from FEMA and 41 too.)

Violent Videos for Children... NO laws!
The Supreme Court on Monday refused to let California regulate the sale or rental of violent video games to children, saying governments do not have the power to "restrict the ideas to which children may be exposed" despite complaints about graphic violence.  Sad but its one of the things we must endure to keep government in check.

Gov. Blago the Hair... guilty (of stupidity)

A federal jury convicted former Gov. Rod Blagojevich on 17 of 20 counts, finding he brazenly abused the powers of his office in a series of attempted shakedowns captured on undercover government recordings.

AP - Stunned and nearly speechless after hearing the verdicts against him, former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich will wake up Tuesday to the stark reality that he is likely headed to federal prison within months, leaving behind his wife, two young daughters and comfortable home in a leafy Chicago neighborhood.

Nebraska Residents Believe their neighborhood Nuclear Power Plant company... not sweating the flood.

An aerial view of flood waters surrounding the Cooper Nuclear Power Plant near Brownville, Nebraska June 24, 2011. The Missouri River, swollen by heavy rains and melting snow, has been flooding areas from Montana through Missouri. REUTERS/Lane Hickenbottom(Reuters) - Residents near a nuclear plant on the rain-swollen Missouri River were largely unconcerned about any potential safety risks from flooding ahead of a nuclear regulator's visit on Sunday.

Gregory Jaczko, the chair of the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission will monitor flood preparations during a visit to the Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownville.
The plant is located about 80 miles south of Omaha, where snow melt and heavy rains have forced the waters of the Missouri River over its banks, although they have not flooded the plant and receded slightly on Sunday.

"I just don't think the water is going to get that high," said Brownville resident Kenny Lippold, a retired carpenter who has been following each step of the flood preparations in this riverside village of 148 residents.

"They claim that they are going to keep operating," Lippold said, adding that he will not flee his home of 29 years even though it is less than a mile from the Cooper reactor.  More on the story...

Peoria flashmob overtly racial
This eye-witness account is from Paul Wilkinson, president of the Altamont Park Neighborhood Association:

Tonight, around 11 p.m., a group of at least 60-70 African American youth marched down one of the side streets (W. Thrush) to the 4 lane main drag (Sheridan). They were yelling threats to white residents. Things such as we need to kill alll the white people around here. They were physically intimidating anyone calling for help from the police. They were surrounding cars. Cars on the main drag had to slam on their brakes to either avoid the youth blocking not only all four lanes, but a large section of the side street as well. fights were breaking out among them. They were rushing residents who looked out their doors, going on to porches, yelling threats to people calling the police for help.

Cars were doing U turns on the streets just to avoid the mob, mostly male. One youth stated his grandfather was white and several assaulted him on the spot. One police officer answered the call. The youth split into two large groups, one heading north, the other south. They were also yelling racial threats to the police officer but he was outnumbered. Another police car did not show up until after the youth finally dispersed and the patty wagon (van) also eventually showed up.

Residents are very shaken, both black and white alike. This is the fifth large mob action in about a month with smaller groups of 10-12 are out threatening children and adults a few evenings a week or later into the night. The times vary, even occuring during the day. In talking to the police officer, they are short staffed. Residents were advised to simply keep inside and to lock their doors. In other words buckle down, it’s not even safe to sit on your porch or go into your yards.
“The fifth large mob action in about a month.” Wow. This is really outrageous. Why is this neighborhood having to put up with this? “Residents were advised to simply keep inside and to lock their doors”? Seriously? That’s the best we can do for our fellow citizens’ safety?
This needs to be addressed, and quickly.  (This story posted on the Peoria Chronicle was withdrawn from the internet.  Probably too hot to handle and politically incorrect.)

He's tired of the crap.  An essay.

I'm 63.  Except for one semester in college when jobs were scarce and a six-month period when I was between jobs, but job-hunting every day, I've worked, hard, since I was 18. Despite some health challenges, I still put in 50-hour weeks, and haven't called in sick in seven or eight years. I make a good salary, but I didn't inherit my job or my income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the economy, there's no retirement in sight, and I'm tired. Very tired.

I'm tired of being told that I have to "spread the wealth" to people who don't have my work ethic. I'm tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy to earn it.

I'm tired of being told that Islam is a "Religion of Peace," when every day I can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing their sisters, wives and daughters for their family "honor"; of Muslims rioting over some slight offense; of  Muslims murdering Christian and Jews because they aren't "believers"; of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims stoning teenage rape victims to death for "adultery"; of Muslims mutilating the genitals of little girls; all in the name of Allah, because the Qur'an and Shari’a law tells them to.

I'm tired of being told that out of "tolerance for other cultures" we must let Saudi Arabia use our oil money to fund mosques and mandrassa Islamic schools to preach hate in America and Canada, while no American nor Canadian group is allowed to fund a church, synagogue or religious school in Saudi Arabia to teach love and tolerance.

I'm tired of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global warming, which no one is allowed to debate.

Planned Parenthood goes to court with KANSAS over federal funds

Planned Parenthood sues Kan. officials over funds
Planned Parenthood has filed a federal lawsuit over a provision in Kansas' next state budget preventing it from receiving federal family planning dollars.
Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri filed the lawsuit Monday in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan. It alleges the provision, urged by abortion opponents, violates the organization's free speech and due process rights.
The provision says the state's portion of federal family planning dollars must go first to public health departments and hospitals. Planned Parenthood expects the provision to cost it $330,000.

Kansas Governor Sam Brownback has been waging a war against abortion providers... his latest trick has been to write regulations so picky that the few physician clinics in the state can't comply... so he can shut them down.  Is this another move for Republicans to lean on clinics and advisors like PP to run them out of business...even though abortion is legal in the US?

TSA wants leukemia victim, 95, to remove her adult diaper. Skipwaves 6/26

A woman has filed a complaint with federal authorities over how her elderly mother was treated at Northwest Florida Regional Airport last weekend.

Jean Weber of Destin filed a complaint with the Department of Homeland Security after her 95-year-old mother was detained and extensively searched last Saturday while trying to board a plane to fly to Michigan to be with family members during the final stages of her battle with leukemia.

Her mother, who was in a wheelchair, was asked to remove an adult diaper in order to complete a pat-down search.

“It’s something I couldn’t imagine happening on American soil,” Weber said Friday. “Here is my mother, 95 years old, 105 pounds, barely able to stand, and then this.”

Sari Koshetz, a spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration in Miami, said she could not comment on specific cases to protect the privacy of those involved.  Read more of this outrage from Panama City.

Another arrest for recording a cop... when will they learn the Constitution?

Can you be arrested for recording police from your front yard? If the video you’re about to see is for real, then yes.

A woman in Rochester, NY was allegedly arrested last month when she decided to film a traffic stop that happened in front of her house. With camera in hand, she reportedly stood in her front yard and filmed the events. But after recording for a little while, eventually an officer started addressing her, telling her that he didn’t feel “safe” with her recording him and telling her to go into her house. She refused, saying she had the right to record from her front lawn. He disagreed. That eventually led to her arrest:

Venzuela dictator Chavez said to be critical in Cuban hospital. Skipwaves 6/25

Hugo Chávez extended stay in a Cuban hospital is because he is in critical condition, according to a report in El Nuevo Herald.

The Venezuelan president, who was last seen in public June 9 and last heard from on June 12, on a phone call with Venezuelan state television, was said to have been treated for a pelvic abscess in Cuba.

During the call Chávez said that medical tests showed no sign of any "malignant" illness.

But according to the report in El Nuevo Herald, Chávez finds himself in "critical condition, not grave, but critical, in a complicated situation."

Chávez silence has led to chatter and speculation in Venezuela that the socialist leader is actually suffering from prostate cancer. Intelligence officials could not confirm a diagnosis of prostate cancer but Chávez family did go to Cuba in the last 72 hours, according to wire service EFE.

Chávez daughter Rosinés and his mother Marisabel Rodríguez "urgently" left the country and headed to Cuba in a Venezuelan air force plane.  Cuba's state media website, Cubadebate, released photos on June 17 that showed Chávez posing with Fidel and Raul Castro in his hospital room.

NO!  Says the government... from the Vancouver paper

CARACAS, June 26, 2011 (AFP) - The Venezuelan government rejected reports Sunday that President Hugo Chavez is in critical condition following emergency surgery in Cuba and insisted that the firebrand leader is "recovering well."  Chavez's government said he had an operation for a pelvic abscess on June 10 and continues to mend.

"He is recovering," Information Minister Andres Izarra told AFP in the wake of reports from Miami's El Nuevo Herald which cited unnamed U.S. intelligence sources as saying Chavez, 56, "is in critical condition — not on the brink of death, but critical indeed."  Read more...

Texas Lawmakers AWOL For Vote On TSA Groping Bill

It’s now apparent that the primary culprit behind the fact that lawmakers failed to show up for the vote was none other than Republican Speaker of the House Joe Straus, who labeled the bill “nothing more than an ill-advised publicity stunt,” despite the fact that it merely sought to reinforce language already present in the 4th amendment.

The Texas Tribune reports that Straus approached the bill’s primary sponsor Rep. David Simpson earlier this week and insisted that language pertaining to “private parts” be removed from the legislation altogether, which would have completely gutted the bill.

As Simpson has emphasized, this bill is far from symbolic, it’s specific in its remit to “expand the federal definition of “official oppression” to prohibit federal employees from improperly touching a person’ s private areas”.

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, who to his credit doesn’t appear to be acting as a roadblock for the bill  this time around, released a statement this afternoon saying that the Senate would try to pass the bill out of committee on Monday.   More on this from Alex Jones website

NATO really IS trying to take out Libya's Crazy Leader

The top U.S. admiral involved in the Libya war admitted to a U.S. congressman that NATO forces are trying to kill Libyan leader Muammar al-Qaddafi. The same admiral also said he anticipated the need for ground troops in Libya after Qaddafi falls, according to the lawmaker.

House Armed Services Committee member Mike Turner (R-OH) told The Cable that U.S. Admiral Samuel Locklear, commander of the NATO Joint Operations Command in Naples, Italy, told him last month that NATO forces are actively targeting and trying to kill Qaddafi, despite the fact that the Obama administration continues to insist that "regime change" is not the goal and is not authorized by the U.N. mandate authorizing the war.

BORING disaster coverage Enough look-a-like feature stories on the river already! And other stuff too.

KMBC TV clearly wants to smoke its competitors with more flooding coverage than everyone put together...but it's starting to all look alike.  How many feature stories on the powerful river can you do?   Time to tell us whats happening to the evacuees, are they insured?  Where are they now?   Where is next to get high water?   How many people are really affected in Missouri?  Whats up with Minot where the REAL flooding is?  Or are they going to interview every single farmer flooded out and videotape the making and placing of every sandbag as the river crests ever more downstream?

All the same good questions TV people never tell you from Joplin.  Even now, the theme of most tornado stories is reporter amazement at what a tornado can do.  Time now to find out what JOPLIN is doing besides clearing the now familiar rubble.  Where are they all living?  Are the insurance companies paying off or screwing them over?   How do they eat?  What about power?  ARe they getting their cars replaced?  Are the hotels full or have many people cleared out?

 Corps Caught in the Middle

"There's long been tension between upstream and downsteam interests," said David Pope, executive director of the Missouri River Association of States and Tribes.

In most wet years, this tension is more muted with enough water to go around. But when the river floods, like in 2011, interests along the river want the excess water to go somewhere else.

Depression Soup Line for jobless
Why the Jobs Situation Is Worse Than It Looks
We now have more idle men and women than at any time since the Great Depression

The Great Recession has now earned the dubious right of being compared to the Great Depression. In the face of the most stimulative fiscal and monetary policies in our history, we have experienced the loss of over 7 million jobs, wiping out every job gained since the year 2000. From the moment the Obama administration came into office, there have been no net increases in full-time jobs, only in part-time jobs. This is contrary to all previous recessions. Employers are not recalling the workers they laid off from full-time employment.  More from US News....

Will Obamacare Destroy Private Insurance?

I haven't been blogging about the great McKinsey Obamacare study flap, but in a nutshell, McKinsey conducted a survey of employers and concluded that 30% of all companies would stop providing health coverage once Obamacare kicked in in 2014.

Koch Brothers....Yes keep YOUR hands off!
Conservatives immediately sounded the alarm, but McKinsey refused to explain their methodology or divulge anything about either the questions they asked or how they "educated" respondents before getting their answers.

Under considerable pressure, McKinsey finally released a brief summary of their methodology along with a weasely clarification that their report wasn't meant to be a prediction and had only said that 30% of companies "might" stop providing health insurance, not "would." Whatever. It was too late: the 30% estimate had long since become a piece of conservative lore about the dire effects of Obamacare.

DWI Blood Draws without a Warrant?

Do law enforcement officers in Missouri have the right to order a blood draw if they suspect a driver is drunk -- even if they haven't gotten a judge to issue a warrant?

At issue is a case involving a Cape Girardeau man, Tyler McNeely, who was pulled over after speeding and weaving in October 2010. McNeely refused to give a breath sample or a blood sample -- which is more accurate than a Breathalyzer and increasingly used in DUI cases across the nation.

The Bieb gets Jumped.

Justin Bieber was tackled and knocked to the ground by a man who jumped a barricade outside Macy’s in New York this afternoon, say witnesses on the scene.

“He literally tried to attack him,” said one woman.

On the ground, Bieber was heard saying, “What? What?”

Bieber was described as “startled and shaken up,” but not injured.

Bieber had been inside the store to promote his new fragrance “Someday” when he went outside to greet approximately 500 fans who were unable to attend the event inside Macy’s.

Witnesses say that as Bieber came out the door, an unidentified man jumped a police barrier and knocked him to the ground.   VIDEO...SCREAMING GIRLS SEE HIM GO DOWN

Cops grabbed the man, who reportedly was a plainclothes officer who initially didn’t identify himself.
Gossip Cop can confirm that the police also took away and summonsed a 47-year-old security guard for Bieber who didn’t budge when officers asked the crowd to move away from the singer.
He was later cited disorderly conduct.

After the incident, Bieber went back into the store.
