Rick Perry reportedly plans to announce on Saturday that he is running for president. Citing unnamed sources familiar with the plan, Politico reported on Monday that the governor will use a speech in Charleston, S.C., to “remove any doubt about” his plans.
He is likely to make a formal declaration in Texas, perhaps in Houston next week.
The long-anticipated announcement will come the same day as the Iowa straw poll, a campaign ritual that tests the name recognition and organizational capabilities of the GOP candidates. As an unannounced candidate, Perry is not on the straw-poll ballot, but a group called “Americans for Rick Perry” has been urging Iowans to make him their write-in candidate.
