As expected, Rick Perry announces for President. Bachmann takes Iowa Straw poll

Near the tail end of a long speech in South Carolina, Texas Gov Rick Perry announced himself as  a candidate for president.  Going for a Kennedy-esk quote, Perry said, "We are not subjects of the government, the government is subject to Americans."  Perry began portraying his small town roots and ended appealing to Tea Party activists with many popular Republican talking points...balanced budget, tort and tax reform, jobs for America...all the usual conservative high notes.

AMES, Iowa (AP) - Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann won a test vote of Iowans on Saturday, a show of strength five months before the state's caucuses kick off the GOP presidential nominating season. The result is the first indication of what Iowans think of the field of Republicans competing for the chance to challenge President Barack Obama next fall. But it's hardly predictive of who will win the winter Iowa contest, much less the party nod or the White House.

Ron Paul finished second in the Iowa poll and Governor Perry finished sixth as a WRITE IN vote. More from CNN...

Iowa observation:  Based on several interviews and the debate itself, it's clear Bachmann offers well rehearsed responses to questions, no matter what the question is.  Escape and evade.  Bachmann's the QUEEN OF TALKING POINTS!

Texas Observation:  Rick Perry is so far to the right, I need to buy a wider computer screen just to see his face!
