OTHERWISE, it's just unabashed RADIO PROMOTION for a station wanting to call itself 'News Radio'.
KMBZ or any other station could carry the whole thing through their network at no cost. But FOR A FEW THOUSAND DOLLARS MORE, they can send one one of their visible news personalities, fly him there, put him up at a hotel, and do promos of him saying "From the inauguration in Washington..." Well, that makes it all worthwhile. Viewers will think, "wow, KMBZ spent the money to send their local guy to cover a national story." Guess that's kewl! Lots of KMBZ promoting it's local guy at the "BIG STORY" for days and days! While you'll "LOG" it as "News", it really should be logged as "Promotion". Admittedly, the FCC on reviewing your license renewal, would be more impressed if you log it as "NEWS" and not "PROMOTION!"
So don't insult people by saying "It's called news, dumbass". It's NOT radio news at all! It's NOT live and local, and nobody in THIS room is going to be fooled by your wordplay! Fact is, most Americans understand what promotion and spam is. Understood it for decades.
Anybody who works in corporate America understands 'imaging'--not just media people. We ALL do it,whether we say "How may I direct your call?" to us web producers, copywriters, we who design and wear Walmart smocks, we who hang signs from retail store ceilings and so many other things we do to "SELL"! And we consumers have been spam and marketing consumers all our lives...since the days of Tony the Tiger selling a box of sugared corn flakes!
What YOU need to do, radio bud, is not be so arrogant as to think that you're fooling anybody with your silliness . The only people who will get inaugural value out of radio are those who didn't, or couldn't, take the day off and wanted to hear it live before waiting until they got home to watch the full rebroadcast. They may watch that too but yes, of those who arent listening to FM, you'l get a few thousand listeners catching the speeches if you carry it live.. And YUP, some may remember who they were listening to and even 'remember it.' (giggle}
If radio was doing it's job...it would be on public radio, cover to cover...and somebody running an FM radio station would already be using their frequency to rebroadcast one of the 24 hour news channels in the public interest. Will public radio...or will they rather carry "Walt Bodine"?
It's actually sad that an event as important as an inauguration-- or any other major news event-- would be covered by so FEW radio outlets! Imagine how few people would know major events are going on, as they unfold! HOW MANY STATIONS would tell their listeners at once, if the US PRESIDENT DECIDED TO ATTACK IRAN? Let's not depend on MOST RADIO to tell us what's going on!
That no one does, just shows us what profit greed and stupidity does to broadcast NOT in the public interest.
We all know, that BZ will get more mileage REPEATING the coverage in the form of 30 second promos for their FRONT PERSONALITIES than they will doing the original midday broadcasts, where most people are at work and not listening at all!
We'll hear them over and over, advertising themselves unabashedly, during morning and afternoon drive, long after the inauguration itself! "OMG, we're so wonderful, we paid to send one of our local guys to send back reports from as close as they can get, given that we have no national connections. But HEY. We were HERE! So love us more than the only OTHER local news station, KCMO... who didnt' spend the money to send someone only for promotional purposes!"
