Plaza lights glow again
Even a bah humbug! economy couldn’t crush the Christmas spirit as thousands turned out tonight to enjoy the Country Club Plaza lighting ceremony.
David Cook of “American Idol” fame plucked his niece from the crowd to flip the switch at 6:30 p.m., bathing the enthusiastic throng in a warm glow and kicking off another festive holiday season in Kansas City.
Before the 280,000 lights came on, musical groups and dancers provided the entertainment for the 79th celebration of the Thanksgiving Day tradition.
(Revisit Kansascity.com later tonight for updated coverage of the lighting ceremony, or buy a copy of tomorrow’s Kansas City Star.)

A young Stanford kid (he's 55) who describes himself as a 'classicist', explains what's gone wrong with the younger generation, the media. and American culture. I don't agree with his politics but as a guy who was forced into four years of high school Latin, I'm afraid I do agree with much of what he says. And yes, it's occurred to me that most of the black anchors on CNN are gay or nearly so--guess they're called 'metrosexuals?'.
Enjoy the read...called Ten Random Politically Incorrect Thoughts, from a guy by the name of Victor Davis Hanson-- must be a pretty snooty guy with a name like that. But I found this guy on a link in the Star's Prime Buzz today, and most assuredly he has a bigger audience than I do! What the hell is a 'classicist'? I suppose if I read upscale New York magazines, I'd know that but I spend too much time watching CNN's metrosexuals. Here's what a classicist is, as if you care.

'Yes What can I do for you?'
'I'm calling to report 'bout my neighbor Virgil Smith....He's hidin' marijuana inside his firewood! Don't quite know how he gets it inside them logs , but he's hidin' it there.'
'Thank you very much for the call, sir.'
The next day, the Sheriff's Deputies descend on Virgil's house. They search the shed where the firewood is kept. Using axes, they bust open every piece of wood, but; find no marijuana. They sneer at Virgil and leave.
Shortly, the phone rings at Virgil's house.
'Hey, Virgil! This here's Floyd....Did the Sheriff come?'
'Did they chop your firewood?'
'Happy Birthday, buddy!'
(Rednecks know how to git-R-dun).

Yes, lots and lots of us ARE losing our jobs as companies tighten belts. Sometimes even to lay off high salaried people and replace them with cheaper ones. Of course this has been going on since US companies found cheaper workers OVERSEAS. Millions of Americans who used to actually MAKE THINGS, now can only SELL THEM in retail stores.
The last bastion of this is the US Auto Industry... where bankruptcy and reorganization will cause their overpaid autoworkers to take pay cuts like the rest of us. The unions have always wanted to keep the benefits high even if their wages priced US cars out of the market. This strategy cost them union members when sales fell. The UAW didn't mind, as Americans decided instead to buy cheaper Toyota and Hondas, where non-union workers made less. Yes, the UAW would rather hold out for higher wages against the US carmakers, even if the Japanese win the sales battle and US car sales dropped! They'd rather the companies they work for sold LESS...just to keep their salaries up. To union people, it's all about the 'contract', not the business. This is a problem when union people are so stupid they'd overprice their cars to the point America will then turn to Toyota-- the point where unions become too stupid for their own good.
The dilemma for the new president and the democratic controlled congress is that they owe these union workers and their idiot leaders their very election. Unions have always supported democrats who in turn have protected them with favorable laws. On the other hand, Republicans have always supported the auto companies themselves with laws to protect profits.
In the 1950s, Republicans claimed this well known phrase, "what's good for General Motors is good for America." Automaking got as big as the cars themselves.
Now no one except GM, Ford, and Chrysler, (and all their union workers and non-union suppliers) want to see a $25 billion loan with no strings attached. That affects tens of millions of people. Would NOT helping, press America into a Depression that spirals our economy to go downward, costing the whole country its cushy standard of living?
Some suggest to let them go bankrupt. It happened to the airline industry and, yes, many airline salaries fell; many think the autoworkers should take pay cuts too. If anything, the airlines became more lean and efficient. So far it appears safety has not been compromised because airliners have not been falling out of the sky. Maybe that would be good in the long run and cars will be cheaper.
We've seen stark physical evidence of a collapsing economy and signs that's not over yet. A drive through the bottoms filled with abandoned buildings, upscale stores closing in favor of the discount stores. Most clothing and shoe manufacturing in the US is gone now, exported to Asia. Textile towns that once flourished in the South are seriously depressed. Even electronics. Televisions were made in America by huge corporations which are long gone. Today, they're cheap, disposable, and made in Japan and China.
Computer monitors come from Malaysia which consumers like because they can buy a PC for $600. How has this happened? Republicans have been successful in keeping government fostering a good business climate that promoted corporate growth. Certainly the Reagan 'trickle down' theory didn't work when jobs trickled down overseas, as America's seen when US corporations either bring in foreign workers or just ship the work overseas.
And how can foreigners work for less than Americans? Well in part, they're willing to have fewer TV's, smaller houses and no car. And they don't have superhighways, aircraft carriers and overpriced health care to pay for. They're just satisfied to live more frugally. Americans are learning this too... the whole world's standard of living is leveling out.
Asians are satisfied making less and living with less... and so they get the jobs. And American union workers are standing in front of their CLOSED PLANTS holding their union cards and nothing else.
The easy time for America is over for a few decades, and lots of people were not surprised. We just can't keep taking more of our share in a world of free trade overseas! Time for the UAW to learn that no one is willing to pay a guy $60,000 a year in wages and benefits to hang a plastic bumper on a new Chevy! People will buy a Japanese non-union made car instead because it's cheaper...and better.
Both political parties share blame for failing to regulate greed and caution in the banking system that caused such an October panic. That may be an expensive lessoned learned with this $700 billion dollar bailout to banking that was passed by a truly frightened government. The conservative-touted phrase 'free marketplace', may forever now mean not FULLY free and no pretense of it. Despite what Limbaugh and the free economy dogmatics say, banking will be regulated enough to keep greed under control. Said one politician on Meet the Press this morning, "the banking system is a utility." It drew raised eyebrows but that revelation isn't far from wrong. Not realizing this before now cost the GOP dearly on election day.
The only ones who seem unaffected so far are young people-- the ones who so far haven't started families, who don't watch the news, and who spend all their dollars on jeans, entertainment, cheap rent, and gas. Everybody else may be learning to pinch pennies and button down because they owe. Adults with children can't move back in with their parents... and millions of families are just a few months without a job to be homeless.
Obama issued the unsettling storm watch this weekend, and it hit the Drudge Report like it was the second coming of Christ!
There are some business pundits on cable news suggesting that Americans as a group may be changing their wasteful ways... in part because of the headlines, and because of last summer's spike in gasoline prices that caused a huge drop in driving. People are told to pay off their debt rather than buy more. Good for them, not so good for their neighbor who works in retail and needs people to spend like there's no tomorrow!
We've seen pre-holiday prices are falling everywhere and it's not even after Thanksgiving! That's because goods aren't SELLING. More and more people aren't BUYING. This year, kids may just get a new video game instead of a new video game MACHINE!
And dad may get only ONE sweater instead of FOUR. And maybe the table wont' have cranberries which no one eats anyway. People are catching on that it's okay to be frugal, even if we HAVEN'T lost our jobs.
As to all this scary news, there's nothing we can do about it except go to the basement and wait until it blows over without blowing US over. Santa's sleigh may be a lot lighter this year, compared to years past.

I’d love to know how many people dont watch local news at ALL, except for maybe the weather report! Surely a closely guarded media secret. Lets face it, only anchors, and especially WEATHER anchors, have a draw anymore.
Prolly why stations have cut their reporting staffs and eliminated newsgathering. Now there's reaction to the local paper and occasional TV station journalism.
This all pretty does suck. Viewers, listeners and readers are the victims of this lazy, low budget newsgathering! Too bad. But hell. The rest of society is shrinking, why wouldn’t newsgathering?
Good luck to yas journalists…don’t lose your direction even if you have to quit or lose your job. don’t lose your skills! some people value them. I sure do. Do what some reporters do, set up a blog. It's a place to put the stuff you do and report that doesn’t get on the air.
kudos to KMBCTV9 who lets their people blog stuff they didn’t get on the air. I hope they wont become so paranoid, they’ll withdrawal that privilege! Look at it as a way to reduce frustration by your eager reporters and photogs to report even when you're format limits what they can say on your air due to time constraints. This might be one of the ways to promote retention of talented people! And you need to do that for good reporters do tire of their shackles when they
have great stuff they're dying to report!
Regrets for canceling the Star but it's too much work bending over picking up a soggy paper when I have KansasCity dot com!
So locally, KMBZ, some of the TV types and certainly some of the idiot bloggers in this town continue to beat the truly dead horse, the over-reported saga of Mayor Funky and his heifer wife, Gloria.
Meanwhile disaster is coming...the Economic Perfect Storm that will affect each and every one of us! Problem is, economics is too hard to explain and people in the media with journalism liberal arts degrees have no clue about anything except going on the air. They never did learn much about the society on which they presume to report. So broadcasters go for the easy stuff, not the important stuff! Which is why we're so unprepared for reality! They can tell us the weather, but not the important stuff. THEY JUST DON'T TELL US THE GOOD STUFF, BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT ACTUALLY LOOKING FOR IT!
All they learned how to do was read copy with a broadcast voice. But there's no one around to write intelligent copy. The PRETENSE of credibility, but not the real thing.
So sad. And absolutely not in the public interest! Finally the Wall Street Journal put the Funky wife story in perspective. It's just a quick and dirty human interest story, worth a one time article... the take being that the Mayor must love his wife too much (so said KMBZ) even as Shanin and Parks scratched their heads wondering why the New York writer doesn't think it's a major scandal.
Fact is, it's just a curiosity. But news is hard to come by in Kansas City... so it's big here, in a place where real news either doesn't happen or the Star's laid off all the reporters that actually could have gathered it.
So now we have local TV stations getting their news off of the police scanners, and bloggers getting all their news off of city hall backstabbers. This is how New Orleans and Louisiana, and Chicago got corrupted governments. The media wasn't paying attention and quit shining the light of Truth on public servants.
It's like Gloria Squitero is more important than the running of the government in KCMO, and that suburban governments aren't important at all, mostly because no one has the staff to go cover them.
As I mentioned over on TKC, the only way we're going to get rid of this NON-STORY from the 29th floor of the Funk & Wife, is for a white girl to turn up missing. Hell the media can be preoccupied with THAT KIND of titillation for months! Doesn't have to be here. A girl from Salt Lake City will work, or even a missing high school grad somewhere down in the Caribbean, or another 11 year old in Florida. Or like what was covered the night before nine-eleven. A missing Congressional page. Anythng titillating will do. A congressman tapping his foot in an airport bathroom stall. A governor using a hooker. A president being worshipped in the anteroom by some White House aide on her knees. Maybe a movie star not fit to adopt an African kid. Too bad Howard Hughes is dead. He was plenty weird, fearful of germs, not seen for months.
Maybe Eric Bushman over at KMBZ can finally break the Kennedy Assassination story. Lord knows plenty of JFK buffs have tried, including Gary Mack, another radio guy living down in Dallas, running a museum. (his real name is Larry D. but that isn't a good rock radio name.)
The point is, we need a good scandal to replace this FUNK & WIFE story which is as tiresome and over-covered as Light Rail and Union Station.
We haven't HAD one of those for months...but it won't take long, now that the election's over and even the press will finally lose interest in Sarah Palin and her promiscuous daughter and redneck husband.

First of all... Republicans are the party of the establishment... the established society about people who OWN stuff. Industrialists, businessmen, people in power. The trouble for the REPUBLICANS is that there aren't enough of them to be elected to ANYTHING! Even Dogcatcher!
So what to do?
Republicans, owning most of America, wants the government to foster an environment that is very conducive to them making money.
The problem for Republicans is that there aren't enough of them to even vote to for 'dogcatcher'. Republicans are really about CAPITALISM, INDUSTRIALISM, EVEN SMALL AND LARGE BUSINESSMEN!
In it's purest form, Republican's are not at ALL about Christians or social conservatism. Real Conservatism is about ECONOMIC CONSERVATISM...and nothing else.
So where do Fundamentalists fit in? They don't other than that they represent a large voting block that the Republican industrialists DESPARATELY NEED.
Hence, they pretend to be about religious issues like pro-life, prayer in schools and other issues that might be today's political agenda for the church-going right! True capitalists are just into MONEY, into PROFITS. They couldn't care less about religous views. That's because true capitalists worship MONEY, not God! It's all about making money, not about cuddling with the poor and making their lot in life, better.
In fact, true capitalists would LOVE for underling children-without-parents to be aborted, else they would end up as more mouths never wanting to get off the government tit! They just can't say that, though. Religious evangelists are desperate for a government place to land...and Republicans will allow it because they need those evangelists as a voting block!
Just like republicans need Southern bigots to vote for them too. Republican leaders don't actually ahve to say "Sorry, I dont know what youre saying!" They mostly need to accept today's troubles on face value. NP, "Ford former stockholders"," Chrysler stockholders saying "we dont' care what you decide, so long as you DO IT". And GM... now swallowing their saliva sorry...doesn't inow how to handle a word like "humility!"
Neither does THIS blogger, know how to handle GM chilling out in such a credibility time. What shall I do...as a guy able to break the environment?
